So my youngest sister, Robin, wrote me an email on Thursday telling me that my friend, Mike Sheehy had died. Or so she thought. She was having dinner or drinks or something with some people whom she knows (and my sister Robin knows everyone in Raleigh, North Carolina so asking exactly who doesn't really help), and said that they knew Pat Sheehy, Mike's mom. According to Robin, Pat is no longer the artistic director of Source Theatre. This person told my sister that Pat left because her son died.
Well, Pat only had one son and that was Mike. Mike was my friend. I did not know that he had died. And I'm not sure that all of this is true.
So this is where you come in, lovely readers. Having experienced that six degrees of separation thing far too many times to ignore, I know that someone who reads this blog knows someone who knows someone who can confirm for me if Mike Sheehy has, in fact, passed away. I've been terribly upset by this news, but have been unable to find a number to call his family and ask and quite frankly even feel a little strange about doing that if it is true.
"Hi, it's Jennifer. I heard through the grapevine that Mike died. Is it true?" I mean, if it isn't it's one thing, but if it is, well, it just feels totally disrespectful to call and say something like that. At least to me, it does.
So, here's some facts that might help you know if you know someone who knows Mike. He went to Sidwell Friends School and Colorado College and graduated from Colorado College in 1991 (?) I think. He is an avid scuba diver and instructor and lived in the Virgin Islands for quite a while. He and I shared a house together in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. I lost track of him in about 1996. At that time, he was still living in the Virgin Islands. He is good friends with Tony Munroe, Cristina Bordes and Than Acuff. Tony went to Sidwell, also. Than went to Landon. Cristina went to Colorado College.
I seem to be unable to find any of them right now. So there are some clues. A comment or email or whatever you can provide to help me solve this mystery will be greatly appreciated. I'm not going to believe anything until I have some verification of the facts. Cocktail conversation just doesn't do that for me.
